Summary
I always thought the back of a nickel looks like a watchband, not the exterior of one of the most beautiful houses in North America. Step off the shuttle bus and eyeball Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and you'll see that this is no watchband. "Little mountain" in old Italian, the grandest of presidential homes sits atop an 870-foot- high peak overlooking Charlottesville.
Monticello, however, is just one of a half-dozen presidential homes within driving distance of Roanoke. One won't find so many presidential homes so close together in any other region of the United States.
