The Two-Party System Doesn't Work

Summary


The two-party system is as much a detriment to the political process as Lady Gaga is to music and Ann Coulter is to my attraction to women. This system has largely dominated U.S. politics since the Constitution was written. However, its persistent existence shouldn't be seen as a reflection of its soundness; the Pittsburgh Pirates have been around since 1887.

The existence of two mutually exclusive, organized parties inherently generates disagreement, animosity and ultimately blind rivalry between the two. Just as we rednecks from Virginia Tech have animosity for the rich kids from University of Virginia, Republicans and Democrats often have hatred for one another and apply this kind of group thought to the political process. In the college example, it is relatively harmless; however, in the political process, it is extremely dangerous, as people lose sight of what they really believe in just to beat the other side or further an ideal of their party, at any cost.
