'Remus' Bell Played with Big Names in Bluegrass

Summary


Remulus Junior "Remus" Bell, who played bass for Roanoke-based bluegrass legends Don Reno and Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley's first band, died Monday at age 79.

Bell was born in Floyd County and became a professional musician in 1950 when he was 19. He joined fiddle player Tommy Magness' group the Tennessee Buddies in Roanoke, a country ensemble that included banjo innovator Reno and guitarist and singer Smiley.
