Summary
Rainbow Forest Lake has been under conditional permits for the past 6 years, and the neighborhood association has saved money to try to pay for an engineering study and held hope for a low interest loan. But, said association board member Melissa Floyd, on Jan. 14 they were ordered by the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board to drain the lake due to the lack of progress in repairing the Class 1 dam. The VSWC board is part of the Department of Conservation and Recreation, like the Dam Safety Commission, which has issued the permit and demands for repairs.
Homeowners surrounding the lake are understandably upset. The lake will leave a neighborhood with new real estate assessments. But it will leave a lake begun in the 1960s dead in the 21st century.
