Western Virginia residents and election officials offered their first reactions Thursday to state lawmakers' proposals to redraw legislative districts. The initial reviews are not good.

Speaker after speaker during a Roanoke meeting of the General Assembly's Committee on Privileges and Elections complained that both House and Senate proposals split precincts, carved up communities of interest and generally redrew districts in a confusing manner.
