The blue doghouses in Eugene Davis' back yard are empty. His panting, playful American bulldogs aren't there to fetch a ball, roll over for a belly rub or drool for a Milk-Bone.

The dogs, Tiger and Boss, jumped the chain-link fence around Davis' Northwest Roanoke yard last week. They were on the run for 22 hours before they encountered a Roanoke animal control officer who, police said, shot Tiger to death after the dogs bit him.
