Summary


The Ramsey families have a long and proud heritage that more often than not included successful educators and preachers supported by devoted wives and children. Their roots can be traced to Scotland near the city of Edinburgh. The first of the Ramseys came to Virginia around 1648.

The oldest transfer of record in what is now Franklin County is the transfer of a tract of land to Thomas Ramsey (1734-ca.1790) from King George III of England in 1767.

A Look at the Life of a Franklin County Pioneer

Thomas Ramsey was a patriot and soldier of the American Revolution. His great-grandson Armistead Fuller Ramsey took it upon himself to write Thomas Ramsey's memoirs in a personal style that provides a detailed context of the times as well as the trials and joys of his personal story.

With the understanding that a highly abridged version of his 66- page book follows, Armistead Ramsey's words describe Franklin County life in a way that textbooks or the memories of others fail to capture.
