Gunshot Victim Sues Officer; Lawsuit Also Names Roanoke, Police Chief

Summary


A Roanoke man shot by a police officer last year is suing the officer, the chief of police and Roanoke for $13 million for physical and emotional distress for what the victim said was an unwarranted shooting.

Wilbert Wesley Lewis' attorneys filed the lawsuit in federal court Friday, claiming Officer R.E. Boucher used excessive force, and that the city and Police Chief Atlas "Joe" Gaskins did not provide Boucher the training to deal with stressful situations police face.
