More than two dozen Washington and Lee University freshmen are in Roanoke this week to look at poverty up close, and one of the students, Laura Gronauer, said she glimpsed it as soon as she saw the applications poor people fill out to request aid.

"It was really surprising to see how little some people are making do with," said Gronauer, of Winchester. "There are people who are less fortunate everywhere, but just to see it in the numbers ..."
