Buchanan Elementary School 'Pigs Out On Reading'

Summary

On Tuesday night, March 9, Read Across America at Buchanan Elementary School featured a potbellied pig named Daisy 2 and Farmer Minor as well as FCCLA students from James River High School.

To promote reading, Farmer Minor travels all over the United States with his pet pot bellied pig, the second he has owned. The pig, Daisy 2, comes to events in a stroller. The black-and-white porker oinked occasionally until Farmer Minor played a CD of his pig sounds. The porky visitor sat up in the stroller for a treat or raisins and dried apples. They call the act, "Pig out on Reading." Children and adults alike chuckled at Farmer Minor's stories about how he and his wife, Mrs. Minor, ended up with a pot bellied pig after their children left the nest! The pig sleeps in his arms every night. They have a calico cat and pug who also joined the family but stay at home in Bristol, Conn., with Mrs. Minor while he and Daisy 2 tour the United States. At the end, each child had the opportunity to pet and kiss Daisy 2.
