When Salem Police Chief Jeff Dudley heard that the local hospital would no longer have available nurses who are specially trained in gathering forensic evidence for victims of rape, domestic violence, child abuse and other assault crimes, he wrote a letter asking that the administration reconsider the decision. He wasn't the only one.
Unusual Northern Lights Set Southern Skies Afire
The solar storm that stirred colorful northern lights Monday surprised skywatchers unusually far south, including some who may have mistaken it for a mountain fire in the Alleghany Highlands. The lights are usually visible near the North Pole and South Pole when solar storms happen in the spring. But for the second time in a decade, the lights, called aurora borealis, stretched as far south as Arkansas.
Lucinda Williams Overcomes Sound Woes at Jefferson Center
For a few minutes, it seemed that sound troubles were going to be the story of Lucinda Williams' Tuesday night show at Jefferson Center in Roanoke. "Hang on. I'm sorry," Williams said after stopping "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" just into the first verse. "What does it sound like out there?"
