Conviction Thrown Out in Federal Court

An accountant from Utah who was found guilty last month in a federal case stemming from the attempted financial sabotage of Salem-based Couvrette Building Systems had that conviction set aside Monday. Richard Reid Jenkins faced three obstruction of justice related charges, and a jury in U.S. District Court in Roanoke convicted him of one, acquitted him of another and deadlocked on a third.

Fund Offers Way to Say a Deep 'Thank You'

Last year, Norma Quarles and her husband, Carson Quarles, spent Christmas at Duke University. Norma Quarles was being treated for multiple myeloma, a form of cancer that, while not curable, is treatable. Carson Quarles cared for his wife in the months that followed the July 2008 diagnosis.

Federal Money Pours in for Homeless

At a time when state and local governments are faced with cutting services, the federal government announced last week that it renewed funding for 131 local homeless assistance programs throughout Virginia. The announcement includes $708,856 for programs in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem. That's an increase of about $4,000 from last year.

Roanoke Police Suspect Gang Activity

Roanoke police are looking into gang activity, according to a search warrant filed Monday. The search of a home on Highland Avenue Southeast followed a father's call to police in reference to a burglary -- and his leading an officer to his son's bedroom.

Man, 19, Hospitalized After Shooting in N.W. Roanoke

A 19-year-old man was shot outside the IHOP restaurant in Northwest Roanoke on Sunday afternoon, and a 20-year-old man riding in a car that fled the scene was arrested, police said. When officers responded to the 4700 block of Valley View Boulevard about 3:30 p.m., they found Dominique Maurice Jones had been shot, Roanoke Police Department spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said.

Dog Rescued From S.W. Roanoke Fire

A firefighter rescued a dog Monday morning from a fire that burned in the second floor of a house in Southwest Roanoke. When crews responded about 11:45 a.m. to the two-story house in the 900 block of Howbert Avenue, near Main Street, they found flames and smoke coming from the second floor, and the dog on the roof, Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury said.
