'Green' Is the Theme at Roanoke School

A steady stream of traffic along Roanoke's Colonial Avenue muffles the playful screams of children romping on the playground at Fishburn Park Elementary School. Just a few feet away from the monkey bars is a serene spot where the young students can observe nature -- a kidney-shaped pond with a healthy habitat of algae and several shiny goldfish. Two pondside benches face the busy thoroughfare, but the view is obstructed by the shrubs and foliage along the artificial water's edge.

Change of Command for the 29th Army Band

The crisp, clean notes of a military brass band filled the big drill floor/basketball court at Roanoke's Virginia National Guard Armory at midday Sunday. What's now known as the 29th Army Band has been playing in the building on Reserve Avenue since 1954 and traces its origin to the city to 1922.

Cray's ; Style Still; Thrills His Fans

Attempts to pin a single label on guitarist and singer Robert Cray are pointless. There's no doubt when he launches into a guitar lead that he is deeply rooted in the blues. His playing summons up the old guide stars -- Albert King, Albert Collins, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, T- Bone Walker.

Early Autumn Snowfall Rare in Our Region

Locations in states to our north such as Binghamton, N.Y., and State College, Pa., got their earliest recorded snowfall of at least 1 inch late this past week. That snow event was a little like the one that brought a snowfall to a region from the Central Appalachians through the mid-Atlantic states and into the Northeast 30 years ago.
